"Hit videos are all about guys and girls in they underwears." That's how a character sums up pop music in this wry tale of a young singer with a killer bod who transforms Lewis Carroll's poem "Jabberwocky" into an R&B single, complete with a video in which she battles the monstrous bandersnatch. After she is kidnapped at a party the cut goes to the top of the charts, and Det. Steve Carella, the hero of McBain's 87th Precinct series, goes to work, methodically setting out to nab the perps. The grim twist at the end is a bit predictable, but as usual McBain's dry wit makes it a frabjous day for crime-fictionfans.
