Prince

The Purple One is set to reign again: He'll be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 15 and launches a tour and new album this month. Here are the Prince discs U need 2 own.

DIRTY MIND (1980) The bikini briefs that he wore on the cover are as riotously raunchy as the music on this punk-spiked sleaze-fest. Crucial cuts: "When You Were Mine," "Head."

1999 (1983) Prince serves up a party platter of masterful Minneapolis funk that was truly way ahead of its time. Crucial cuts: "1999," "Little Red Corvette."

PURPLE RAIN(1984) Even the presence of Apollonia can't tarnish the rock-star brilliance of this seminal soundtrack. Crucial cuts: "When Doves Cry," "Purple Rain."

SIGN O' THE TIMES(1987) Prince shows why fans truly adore him on a sprawling tour de force. Crucial cuts: "Sign o' the Times," "Adore."

THE HITS/THE B-SIDES (1993) Even if you own all the other discs, this best-of set is essential for its grade-A B-sides. Crucial cuts: "Kiss," "Erotic City."
