In this noir set in Atlanta, attorney Jack Hammond, booted from his firm because he had an affair with a client's girlfriend that led to her death, now investigates a friend's demise. It leads him to a powerful entrepreneur and an affair with the man's opera singer wife. Arvin's writing is delightfully sardonic: A lawyer visiting Jack "looked around, probably trying to figure out how I practiced law in the same square footage as his executive bathroom." The plot strains toward the end, but by then you'll be hooked.
