Bethany's Next Wave

UPDATED 06/28/2004 at 01:00 AM EDT Originally published 06/28/2004 at 01:00 AM EDT

"I think about sharks all the time," says Bethany Hamilton, 14, the Hawaiian surfer who lost her left arm in an October shark attack. But that hasn't stopped her from getting back on a board—or winning in her age group at a June 13 Honolulu contest. Training hard for the June 22 National Scholastic Surfing Association championships, Bethany has been doing exercises with a latex band (left) and hitting the waves with pal Alana Blanchard, 14 (above). She's also working with a writer on a memoir, due out in October. Says Hawaiian surf coach Rainos Hayes: "There are few girls who can surf at her level with two arms."
