Jude Law has been cleared of assaulting a paparazzi photographer, PEOPLE has learned exclusively.

The actor was arrested Sept. 4 after allegedly assaulting a photographer outside his home in north-west London. He was taken to a central London police station, interviewed and later released on non-monetary police bail. The case was forwarded to the state prosecutors – the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) – for deliberation.

"The police have told me that they and the CPS have examined the photographer's allegation extremely carefully and made the decision that there is no further action to be taken," Law tells PEOPLE.

Law's legal team have always hotly disputed the assault claim. "Mr. Law provided the police with a statement regarding his denials of allegations by a 'paparazzi' photographer against him and made his own allegations concerning the photographer," the legal rep said in a statement on Sept. 5.

Scotland Yard originally required Law to return to a police station but it now confirms that no charges will be filed against the 34-year-old double Oscar nominee. "No further action will be taken and he will not be required to return on bail," a police spokeswoman tells PEOPLE.

Law has recently been promoting his latest film, Sleuth and is now filming futuristic drama Repossession Mambo in Canada.

"Of course I am delighted to be vindicated," Law tells PEOPLE of his clean status.
