Ellen DeGeneres is in trouble after giving away a dog she rescued from an adoption agency.

DeGeneres and her partner, Portia de Rossi, took home a Brussels Griffon mix named Iggy on Sept. 20, but when things didn't work out between Iggy and the couple's cats, the TV host gave the dog to her hairdresser.

In doing so, DeGeneres, 49, violated an agreement with the Mutts and Moms dog rescue agency – by not informing them of the switch-off, reports the Associated Press.

In a follow-up to the adoption, the agency called DeGeneres to inquire about Iggy, and was told another home was found for him. Mutts and Moms then dispatched a rep to the hairdresser's home on Sunday and removed Iggy.

On Monday, DeGeneres went public with the situation on her show (it airs Tuesday), admitting her mistake was not carefully reading the adoption documents. She also says she spent $3,000 to have Iggy neutered and trained to live with her cats.

But Iggy was simply too energetic and rambunctious, she says.

"I guess I signed a piece of paper that says if I can't keep Iggy, it goes back to the rescue organization, which is not someone's home, which is not a family," she said, according to a transcript of the show.

"I thought I did a good thing. I tried to find a loving home for the dog because I couldn't keep it."

DeGeneres also says that her hairdresser's daughters, ages 11 and 12, had bonded with the dog and were heartbroken when he was taken away.

"Because I did it wrong, those people went and took that dog out of their home, and took it away from those kids," says DeGeneres, sobbing.

"I feel totally responsible for it and I'm so sorry. I'm begging them to give that dog back to that family," she says. "It's not their fault. It's my fault. I shouldn't have given the dog away. Just please give the dog back to those little girls."

Mutts and Moms, a volunteer nonprofit organization in Pasadena, Calif., could not be reached for comment, reports the AP.
