Opening-night jitters are the norm for theater directors. But Ethan Hawke has a novel way of dealing with them.

"I'll probably be falling down drunk in the back," he joked Monday morning on Live With Regis & Kelly about his upcoming premiere of Things We Want, the first play he has directed Off-Broadway. "It's so nerve-racking."

Hawke says an added challenge was directing his friends Paul Dano, Peter Dinklage, Josh Hamilton and Zoe Kazan.

"They're so over me," he says. "It's much easier to direct people I just met."

The New Group production of the Jonathan Marc Sherman play, now in previews, opens Nov. 7, the day after Hawke's 37th birthday.
