The reason: The singer, 24, didn't understand that accepting a fine in Norway is the same as pleading guilty – which "could affect her ability to work in the U.S.," lawyer Oleg Kvelstad tells PEOPLE.
Winehouse – along with husband Blake Fielder-Civil and hair stylist Alex Foden, who are also appealing – is claiming she did not understand the Norwegian-language charges she signed Oct. 19.
The trio were arrested in Bergen on Oct. 18, charged with possessing .25 ounces of marijuana, and held overnight in separate cells. They were released upon paying the fines.
"This is an appeal of errors police made in the case," Kvelstad said. If Winehouse is allowed to withdraw her acceptance of the fine, her case would likely go to trial.
