JAZZ
Like many of today's young jazz pianists, Texan Robert Glasper speaks hip-hop, bebop, classical and pop. Though he's played with both Mos Def and Carly Simon, Canvas's accessible melodies, tumultuous beats and bright lyricism tend to recall modern jazz icons like Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. Nine of the 10 tracks are originals. Some, like the adventurous title track, mix odd tempos with a light sparkling touch; others, like “Chant,” create dreamy landscapes of repeated motifs backed by a rhythm section that flows easily with Glasper's most intricate ideas.
