In Margot at the Wedding, Nicole Kidman plays a difficult, pill-popping writer in a dissolving marriage, but in real life her marriage is the most important thing to her.
"Married life comes first and everything else comes second," she said at the premiere Thursday night hosted by Allure magazine editor Linda Wells at Tribeca Grand.
After a whirlwind week, including supporting her husband Keith Urban at the Country Music Awards, Kidman said she was in recovery mode.
"It was great," Kidman, 40, said of the CMAs in Nashville on Wednesday. "I had a lot of fun. I thought he played really well, too ... But I'm exhausted."
Huddled in a turtle neck and double-breasted coat – decidedly dressed down from her sumptuous gown by Alexander McQueen the night before – the actress added, "I have a cold and after this, I'm going to go get into bed and get lots of sleep, I hope."
Kidman also mentioned that though she travels a great deal, she and Urban are now firmly planting themselves in Nashville. "We just bought some property," she said, "so we're in the process of moving in."
In her new film, Kidman portrays a high-strung older sister – she even climbs a tall tree and gets stuck (Kidman did the stunt herself) – to actress Jennifer Jason Leigh. They portray a breathtakingly dysfunctional family, which required some research. "I worked very, very closely with the director (Noah Baumbach) trying to dissect the psychology of the character," Kidman said.
But in her real family, Kidman and her sister Antonia are so close, they are "almost like twins," said the actress. "We're very supportive of each other. It's the opposite of what this film is about."
