REVIEWED BY CLARISSA CRUZ
NOVEL
What if your husband went to the beach late one night—and never returned? Unraveling the mystery behind magazine editor Sarah Larkin's artist husband Todd's disappearance drives this novel. Sarah attempts to piece together the details—Was it a suicide? Had Todd been drinking? Did his recent art contain clues?—while providing a stable home for their 6-year-old and balancing a high-pressure career. The situation is heartrending, but Sarah's clear-eyed take on it (and, less interestingly, on the machinations of the glossy magazine world) keeps the story grounded. The novel was inspired by real life: Former Fitness editor Listfield's husband, sculptor George Dudding, disappeared from a Florida beach in 1999.
