Picks and Pans Review: Buzz Book: Good Calories, Bad Calories
Journalist Gary Taubes spent five years combing research and interviewing diet experts. His conclusion, shared in his controversial new book: "All the conventional wisdom about healthy eating is wrong." Fighting words, so let him explain:
WHICH CALORIES ARE GOOD AND WHICH BAD? Good calories are protein and fat, not necessarily one more than the other. Bad calories are carbs. Carbs regulate insulin levels, and insulin increases fat accumulation.
SOUNDS LIKE THE ATKINS DIET It's not a new message; all I do is investigate the science. The evidence is unambiguous.
IS EXERCISE HEALTHY? Exercise makes you hungry. I don't think it makes you leaner, and I'm not sure it makes you healthier.
WHAT'S YOUR DIET LIKE? Eggs and sausage for breakfast, a hamburger without the bun for lunch ... give up carbs and you lose weight effortlessly. It's weird.
