Once home to basic, everyday accessories, the brand got a hip makeover that turned their pieces into Hollywood must-haves

When designer Reed Krakoff, 43, first joined Coach 10 years ago, "it was popular but had become less exciting." Setting out to revamp the traditional label, Krakoff introduced sassy designs and vibrant colors, and expanded the brand to include shoes and outerwear. Unlike many lines, Coach introduced new products every month. The radical makeover worked: Coach went from $500 million in sales in 1997 to $2.6 billion this year. And while a gaggle of celebs—including Sandra Bullock and Halle Berry—have snapped up the newer pieces, the label has stayed popular with everyday consumers as well. "The key is to always surprise people," says Krakoff, "to keep them coming back."
