"This isn't an easy decision. I hate to lose," Romney said during a midday speech in Washington, D.C. He said he was withdrawing to bolster Republican chances against Democratic candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
Romney picked up 270 delegates in races this week, to McCain's 680. In addition, supporters of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee helped to erode a large portion of Romney's conservative base.
