"Marion never intended to contest nor question the attacks of September 11, 2001, and regrets the way old remarks have been taken out of context," said attorney Vincent Tolesano.
When asked for further comment, PEOPLE was told that the actress, 32, was visiting her 99-year-old grandmother in Brittany on Monday.
Next week, Cotillard is due in Chicago to begin Public Enemies.
Her interview containing the controversial remarks apparently took place in February 2007, on the French channel Paris Premiére's cinema program.
Cotillard has been widely quoted as having said, "I think we're lied to about a number of things." Among her claims was that Americans had destroyed the Twin Towers themselves, because the buildings were an outmoded financial drain.
Cotillard also questioned the American achievement of putting astronauts on the moon in 1969, saying: "Did a man really walk on the Moon? I saw plenty of documentaries on it, and I really wondered. And in any case I don't believe all they tell me, that's for sure."
