A shattered glass pane apparently caused the musician to bleed to death, Reuters reports.
A spokeswoman for the Civil Guard police said an autopsy is underway.
According to the official ABBA Web site, Brunkert, a one-time jazz drummer, also belonged to the Slim's Blues Gang, before becoming part of the pop group Science Poption in the mid-'60s.
His first known session with ABBA took place on the band's initial single, 1972's "People Need Love."
Brunkert and bass player Rutger Gunnarsson are believed to be the only two musicians to perform on all ABBA albums. In addition, Brunkert toured with ABBA in 1977, 1979 and 1980.
With hits including "Waterloo" and "Dancing Queen." ABBA's two male and two female vocalists – Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Fältskog – were among the world's best-known groups from 1972-82.
Their songbook forms the basis for the hit Broadway musical Mama Mia, which is to be a movie with Meryl Streep this summer.
