For Michelle Williams Unexpected isn't just the name of her upcoming album – her new look is enough to make fans glance twice.
The singer recently debuted a trendy shoulder-length cut and side-swept bangs, a fresh update on the long locks of her gospel days. "I figured I have to do unexpected things," she said on Thursday at a private listening party for her new music.
On the topic of the edgy style – hot pink heels and skinny pants – she's sporting in the latest promo photos, she added, "It's very much how I am at home. You know, jeans and a tank top."
The club-ready beats of her upcoming single, "We Break the Dawn” (co-written by Solange Knowles and previewed first on People.com) have already gotten a thumbs up from her mom, who told her, "You need songs those kids in the club can dance to!" as well as from her Destiny's Child pals Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland. "They're excited; they've heard the album."
But for now, she says she's looking forward to walking into a club and hearing her own music being played: "I feel like I'm a first-time artist."
