The two join a host of other names – both familiar and un- – in more than 100 categories in the running for what are widely considered the Oscars of the Web. Now in their 12th year, the Webby Awards recognize excellence on the Internet, including Web sites, online film and video, interactive advertising and mobile Web sites.
The Office's Rashida Jones, Paul Rudd and Jonah Hill are also in a nominated comedy long form or series, Wainy Days on the My Damn Channel site.
Strange bedfellows Annie Lennox, on her site, and Anderson Cooper, on CNN's, have been singled out for best celebrity/fan site nominations – while Bebo, ChangeEverything.ca, Facebook, Flock The Social Web and Ning are in the running for the best social networking award.
Public Votes, Too
The Webbys are presented by the 550 members of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, who include Internet co-inventor Vinton Cerf, R/GA’s Chief Bob Greenberg, The Simpson's creator Matt Groening and movie-studio chief Harvey Weinstein. One distinctive characteristic of the Webbys is that the Web community is given an opportunity to choose winners. From April 8 through May 1, the public may cast votes online for the Webby People's Voice Awards presented by Nokia.
Winners will be announced May 6 and honored at two ceremonies in New York City: The Webby Film & Video Awards on June 9, and The Webby Awards Gala on June 10. Best of all: Winners' acceptance speeches are strictly restricted to five words or less.
