So long, thong: Sex and the City's Kim Cattrall is taking on a different kind of Carrie for her latest role – as Carrie Kipling, wife of English author Rudyard Kipling, in the PBS film My Boy Jack – and the costumes couldn't be further from what she wore in her star-making role as seductress Samantha.

A "lifelong Kipling" fan, Cattrall, 51, was not only "very excited by the whole imperialistic period of the 1890s and the turn of the last century" in her new project, but as she told the Associated Press, "I had never played anyone who actually existed."

Jack, her son in the film, is portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe – better known as Harry Potter.

Two weeks after wrapping My Boy Jack in Ireland and England, Cattrall slipped back into her signature stilettos – and her role as sidekick of Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie – for the Sex and the City movie in New York.

My Boy Jack airs on Masterpiece Classic Sunday, and Sex and the City hits theaters May 30.
