Tori Spelling: I'm a Gay Icon

Liza, Barbra and Cher – move over. Tori Spelling is a gay icon, she declares.

And, in turn, says one half of the cast of the Oxygen network reality show Tori & Dean: Inn Love, "I'm a huge fan of gays. They love me; I love them. They consider me kind of a gay icon, which they've labeled me as," reports Reuters.

She also believes her role in the romantic comedy Kiss the Bride, opening Friday, will help keep this love alive.

In fact, Spelling, 34, who delivered a memorable turn as the self-obsessed actress in 1999's gay-themed movie Trick, says that when it came to being sold on Kiss the Bride, its community appeal "was probably one of the top things that made me want to do the movie."

In it, she plays Alex, the bride-to-be of Ryan (Jack O'Shea), whose first boyfriend – in high school – was Matt (Phillipp Karner). Fade to 10 years later, when Matt learns of Ryan's upcoming wedding. He shows up to convince his ex not to join the other team.

TV Fan Base

Having first established a fan base back in the '90s, thanks to her role as the empathetic Donna Martin on Beverly Hills, 90210, Spelling has subsequently embraced her gay admirers by being an advocate for same-sex unions.

Last year, she became an ordained minister after two male fans – Tony and Dex, as she identified on her MySpace Celebrity blog – approached her about officiating their wedding at the Fallbrook, Calif., bed and breakfast Spelling ran with husband Dean McDermott (who, by the way, plays a plumber/stripper in Kiss the Bride).

"They said, 'We have this idea. We want you to perform the ceremony ... we're huge fans, it would be so cool if Tori Spelling married us,'" Spelling said. "I haven't done any since ... but I'm open. I'm free, my schedule is wide open."
