Jenna & Laura Bush: Labors of Love
As two former teachers, Laura and Jenna Bush love to share tales from the trenches. "I used to tell Jenna about my children, and she would tell me funny things her students did," says Mrs. Bush, 61, who taught elementary school before becoming a librarian. But when it came to writing Read All About It!, a new children's book based on their experiences, Jenna, 26, initially kept things to herself. "We talked about the idea for a year, then one day Jenna started writing while Barbara and I went for a walk," says the First Lady. "When we came back, it was pretty much done!"
The words came naturally to Jenna, who says she owns "as many kids' books as adult books," including the copy of Goodnight Moon her parents read to her. "We knew what we wanted."
If only planning her May 10 wedding to Henry Hager, 29, were as easy. While she's chosen her dress (see page 124), "I haven't even gotten shoes!" she says, laughing. "I'm a last-minute type of gal. I'm surprised I'm not more Bridezilla, but I'm trying not to get caught up in the details." Luckily, she has a writing partner who can help. Says Laura: "To work with my grown-up daughter as she plans for the rest of her life—it's a wonderful time."
