Behind the Seams
Stars are channeling their inner milk maidens by using braids to accent their coifs. Anne Hathaway and Lucy Liu highlight elegant updos with a sidesweeping braid while Lauren Conrad goes boho chic with a plait at the crown and long, wavy locks.

KATE BOSWORTH MY LIFE ON THE RED CARPET
"The way I dress is very much based on my mood," confessed Kate Bosworth, 25, at the Cinema Society screening of 21 hosted by Calvin Klein Jeans (she's the new face of the brand) in N.Y.C. March 26. "Sometimes I feel more bold, sometimes more shy." But when it comes to fashion risks the star has one rule: "If you don't feel 100 percent confident or truly comfortable in what you're wearing, don't wear it. Don't even try."
MARCH 2006 in Calvin Klein Collection in L.A. "This is quite risqué. It was [written] that I had a boob job, which, clearly, I haven't."
MAY 2007 in Prada in N.Y.C. "This was the Met Ball. One of my favorite looks."
OCTOBER 2007 in Fendi in Beijing. "I wasn't going to wear this jacket. [But] it was absolutely freezing!"
FEBRUARY 2005 in Valentino Couture in L.A. "It felt like flowers just dripping down my body."
MARCH 2008 in Calvin Klein Collection in N.Y.C. "My favorite thing about Calvin is that it's never overdone."
CARLA BRUNI'S LONDON TOUR
She came. And she charmed. On her first trip to the U.K. as First Lady of France, Carla Bruni, 39, took her cue from Jacqueline Kennedy, sporting pillbox hats and diplomatically correct Dior (a French label designed by Brit John Galliano). The cranky British tabs couldn't help but swoon, but Bruni's biggest piece of détente was perhaps wearing flats and at least trying not to upstage hubby Nicolas Sarkozy. Says an eyewitness: "She left him to be the center of attention."
MARCH 26 In a Dior coat, hat, gloves and bag.
MARCH 26 In a Dior coat, dress, bag and shoes.
MARCH 26 In head-to-toe Dior at a state dinner.
MARCH 27 In a Dior coat and suit and Tod's flats.
MARCH 27 In a silk satin Dior gown at a state banquet.
It must have been hard to pack for a high society whirlwind! Here's how Bruni kept it royal.
• START WITH A NEUTRAL BASE
She stuck to mostly gray, ladylike pieces, then added pops of color with jewel-toned coats.
• KEEP ACCESSORIES SIMPLE
She avoided statement bags in favor of simple black purses. Jewelry was subdued, except for diamonds at galas, bien sur.
• CHOOSE FLATS
She skipped heels in favor of dark flats and didn't tower over her mate. Bonus: more room in the suitcase for Tower of London souvenirs!
