"I haven't had any luck this year," she told PEOPLE Thursday night at a benefit for the Jazz Foundation of America at the famed Apollo Theater in New York City. "It's been a couple years since I've been in a really serious relationship. Every now and then, you might think you're coming up on a winner, and then it doesn't work out."
But in truth, Williams hasn't had much time for the singles scene. She's been hard at work on her first solo R&B album Unexpected, which will hit stores in August. (Click here to hear her first single "We Break the Dawn.") Still, the 27-year-old singer finds herself second-guessing her focus.
"It's like, am I now falling in that percentage of women who could possibly be single for the rest of their life because of their career or what they do? And I don't want that."
So, what kind of guy does this eligible bachelorette want?
"I need a grown man. Somebody who is focused. Somebody who is working. Somebody who is loving life. Somebody who is strong. A charmer," said Williams.
But the singer admits that men sometimes are scared to say hello, so she'll be the one to make the first move and initiate conversation. "I'm human. I don't bite," she said with a laugh.
And on the eve of the release of the ultimate single gals' flick, Sex and the City, Williams reminded PEOPLE that Destiny's Child's music video for "Girl" was inspired by the HBO series.
"I guess I was Samantha. Beyoncé was at the computer – she was Carrie. And I want to say Kelly was Charlotte. We didn't figure out that part," she said. If given a choice, which Sex character would she be? A combination of Samantha and Carrie, she says. "I think that's a cool balance – strong and in control. That's what I'm going for!"
