"I'm happy to confirm to you that Alessandra Meyer-Wölden and Boris Becker were engaged yesterday with a small circle of family members," Irene Kessler said in a statement Monday.
The news was first announced by the Web site of Germany's mass-circulation daily bild.de. According to the paper, Becker, 40, asked his 24-year-old girlfriend – known as Sandy – to marry him while vacationing on the Italian island of Sardinia.
Although paparazzi have only recently snapped pictures of the two, this is hardly a story of love at first sight. The couple has known each other since she was a child. Her father, Axel Meyer- Wölden, was Becker's most trusted advisor and manager in the 1990s. He died in 1997 at age 56.
Becker has two sons with his ex-wife Barbara and a daughter from a previous relationship.
