SPORTS
Truth be told, I'm usually an opening/closing ceremonies kind of Olympics viewer. I tend to resent the actual sports part for (1) making me feel even more like the muscle-relaxed couch dweller I truly am and (2) preempting much of my usual viewing for three weeks. (Typical scenario: "Wait, archery is on instead of Ellen DeGeneres? Nooooo!") And yet this year's Games promise to be the most exciting in years. For starters, the East Coast's 12-hour time difference with Beijing means that most events will air live in prime time. And unlike recent host countries Greece and Australia, China's sprawling athlete roster presents a formidable competition for the Americans. (Three gold medal contenders—among many—to watch: gymnast Paul Hamm, sprinter Allyson Felix and swimmer Katie Hoff.) Once again network MVP Bob Costas will anchor much of the coverage, which will broadcast entirely in high definition for the first time. Pass the snacks and count me in.
