's Chef, died Aug. 10 after collapsing at his Memphis-area home. Raised in Covington, Tenn., by his sharecropper grandparents, Hayes, 65, was a pioneer at Memphis' Stax Records and helped write '60s classics like "Soul Man." Solo success came to the singer with 1969's Hot Buttered Soul
's title song. With his gold chains and sunglasses, "he was the embodiment of black empowerment," says Tim Sampson, spokesman for the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. "His soulful music touched millions of hearts," says singer Ashanti.
