Former Sen. Fred Thompson came to the defense of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin Tuesday night.

In his folksy, prime-time address to the Republican National Committee, Thompson, the actor-turned-senator-turned-actor said Palin, GOP presidential candidate John McCain's choice for vice president, could surely stand up to "Washington pundits and media big shots" attacking her and her family after her disclosure that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant.

Of Palin, Thompson said: "She has run a municipality and she has run a state. And I can say without fear of contradiction that she is the only nominee in the history of either party who knows how to properly field dress a moose ... with the possible exception of Teddy Roosevelt."

Palin was in Minnesota, but remained out of sight on Tuesday as aides said she was working on her own speech to the convention, scheduled for Wednesday night.

"She and John McCain are not going to care how much the alligators get irritated, when they get to Washington they're going to drain that swamp," Thompson said.
