The actor declined to discuss the gender of his baby on the red carpet at the Toronto Film Festival Saturday night, but his Blindness director Fernando Meirelles couldn't contain himself.
"It's a chico! A boy!" he gleefully told PEOPLE. "I was talking to him about [the baby] today and he's so excited. He said he's had time to prepare and he's really looking forward to it."
While his rep confirmed, Bernal didn't elaborate on having a boy, but did share his reaction to hearing the news about his impending fatherhood.
"Like everyone's reaction," he said. "Happiness!"
