Calling his July 27 traffic accident "eye-opening and terrifying," Shia LaBeouf considers himself lucky to be alive.

"The car hit me at 70 m.p.h.," the Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull star, 22, tells Entertainment Tonight in his first interview since his truck flipped over on a West Hollywood street.

"It was one of the biggest things that's happened to me, for sure, in my life," said LaBeouf. "I'm grateful to be here."

The actor was treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for injuries he sustained to his head, left hand and knee. Not seriously hurt were the passenger riding with him, as well as the driver of the other car involved in the crash.

At the hospital, LaBeouf was cited for misdemeanor DUI because "he was showing obvious signs of intoxication from the smell of alcohol coming from his breath," sheriff's Sgt. Scott Wolf told PEOPLE.

However, the actor has yet to be formally charged with any crime.

In addition, LaBeouf may not be at fault for the accident, because the other driver was found to have run a red light, a sheriff's spokesman said.
