In January, PEOPLE challenged eight residents of Mississippi – the most obese state in the nation – to lose weight. The catch? They wouldn't live in a special facility or try a new diet – they had to lose the pounds the old-fashioned way, with diet and exercise.

Their struggle was documented for PEOPLE's upcoming prime-time special, Half their Size: The PEOPLE Magazine Weight-Loss Challenge, airing Sept. 30 on ABC at 10 p.m. ET.
