Harry Potter can sure deliver a crowd. The theater community packed into Broadway's Broadhurst on Thursday night to watch Daniel Radcliffe's gala opening night in Equus.

Glenn Close, Lili Taylor and The Sixth Sense's Haley Joel Osment were among the those in the crowd for the much-anticipated revival of Peter Shaffer's drama about a young man with a pathological fascination with horses.

Osment, who himself is starring in upcoming Broadway revival – of David Mamet's 1976 American Buffalo – told PEOPLE, "I'm happy to be here supporting another great work of theater. It's a great season for Broadway."

Overall, Radcliffe enchanted the critics, who seemed less impressed by how the 1973 play has aged.

"The 19-year-old film star … steps into a mothball-preserved, off-the-rack part and wears it like a tailor's delight – that is, a natural fit that allows the room to stretch, " declares The New York Times.

The city's Daily News adds, "He's terrific and gives a passionate performance" as Alan Strang, the 17-year-old stable hand who worships – and blinds – six horses.

Opined The Washington Post: "Radcliffe's contribution "won't blow you away, it does get a basic job done."
