The plus-sized rocker attended the Q Awards ceremony to collect a Classic Song prize for his single "Bat Out Of Hell."
After arriving on the red carpet looking disheveled, he was unsteady on his feet and later spoke incoherently while accepting the award for his 1979 hit.
"If you don't go over the top, you have no idea what's on the other side," he eventually told the 400 guests at the bash, who were reportedly stunned into silence during his appearance.
The 61-year-old blamed his unsteadiness on medication for a torn retina, while his representative insisted Meat Loaf (a.k.a. Melvin Lee Aday) was suffering from "vertigo."
The spokesman added, "He had not been drinking."
