The pair are scheduled to appear in court Nov. 13 for their arraignment.
The elder O'Neal, 67, and Redmond, 23, were arrested Sept. 17 after sheriff's deputies found drugs in the actor's home during a routine probation search.
In addition to the felony counts, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office charged Redmond with two misdemeanor counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and one misdemeanor count of illegal possession of pepper spray.
Ryan O'Neal's attorney, Mark Werksman, says the actor "found it extremely frustrating and upsetting" to be charged.
"He's not a drug user and he doesn't want to be thought of as a drug user," says Werksman.
Redmond, however, has long battled drug abuse, the lawyer says. Last week, Redmond admitted in court to a drug relapse and was sent to a two-week treatment program.
"Dealing with Redmond's problem over the years has been difficult for (Ryan) and his family, and this is another tough load for him to absorb," Werksman says.
If convicted, Ryan could get up to three years in prison, says Sandi Gibbons, a prosecution spokeswoman. She adds, however, that the courts typically offer first-time offenders drug treatment over prison.
