And if those sentiments weren't clear enough, the concert by Melissa Etheridge and Mary J. Blige Tuesday night to fight Prop 8 raised $3.9 million.
The $1,000-a-head event was intended to help close the gap between the No on Prop 8 supporters, who have raised about $25 million, and the Yes on Prop 8 boosters, who have $27 million in their coffers, reports Variety.
Among the 200 guests at the event, hosted by supermarket mogul Ron Burkle, included Steven Spielberg, Barbra Streisand, Rob Reiner, David Hyde Pierce and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.
A Deal to DonateBlige led the crowd in an emotional rendition of the U2 anthem One, while Etheridge offered to sing for a donor in return for a $50,000 donation to the cause. One couple took her up on the deal – and booked her to serenade them at their wedding in December.
"Fifteen million dollars ..." Etheridge said of funds sent from out-of-state churches to support Proposition 8. "Could you imagine all the people they could have housed in Louisiana? Send it to Darfur! Send it to Tibet!"
Proposition 8 has recently been targeted by other celebrities, from Ellen DeGeneres – who challenged GOP vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin about her call to ban same-sex marriage – to Brad Pitt, who made a significant contribution of his own funds.
