If Yoda were reviewing this rowdy comedy, he'd say, "Execution sloppy is, but idea merit may have." Fanboys follows four Star Wars fanatics (Fogler, Sam Huntington, Chris Marquette and Jay Baruchel)—later joined by a female pal (Bell)—as they drive cross-country in 1998 to George Lucas's Skywalker Ranch in California. Their plan: to break in and get an early peek at 1999's Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace.
The film offers solid gags involving light-sabers and other Star Wars touchstones, but too often Fanboys is just another sophomoric guy comedy, piling on jokes about bare breasts and penis size. The fun here is cameos by Princess Leia herself, Carrie Fisher; Seth Rogen (in dual roles); and Ethan Suplee, who does a blustering take on real-life über-fanboy Harry Knowles, creator of the Ain't It Cool News movie web site.
