John Mayer's Solution for Red-Carpet Nerves: Jen Aniston
"You can go from a Grammy winner to a water boy when you walk into the Kodak Theatre on Oscar night," Mayer said during an interview on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM radio show Wednesday morning. "That's just, like, a whole different level."
Once he got over his nerves, the singer admits, "it was really, really fun."
Mayer said he initially went as "moral support" for Aniston – who presented the animation awards in front of her ex-husband, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie in the audience – but it was actually Aniston who supported him.
"I basically stepped into the picture frame of Hollywood," Mayer said of walking the red carpet at the big event. "For one night, I put on the most amazing suit and entered into the picture frame. You have to really be with someone that you know who has your back in that situation. And she did, and it was really great."
"At some point, you feel comfortable and say, 'This is the choice I want to make,' " he says about stepping out so publicly with his girlfriend. "I think a year is a pretty good period of time with which to say, 'Let's go have a really good time at the Oscars!' "
Then there was the fun part: meeting and mingling with all the A-listers. According to Mayer, he asked his girlfriend, "Will you please introduce me to so and so?"
Up next for Mayer: A duet with Jordin Sparks on March 26 in Los Angeles to Benefit the VH1 Save The Music Foundation.
