U2 may be one of the most celebrated and honored bands of all time, but attending college is not among their list of accomplishments.

"We started a rock band to avoid college, now look where we ended up," the U2 lead singer joked to a roaring crowd of students, faculty and alumni early Friday morning at Fordham University.

Added drummer Larry Mullen Jr: "I'm so excited to be here. I'm so pleased for my dad because he's going to see this sometime soon and he's going to say, 'My son Larry finally made it to college.' "

The band performed at the Bronx campus for Good Morning America. The concert featured new and old favorites, from "Get On Your Boots" to "Beautiful Day" – and the band gave a special dedication to Fordham students.

"I'd like to think that Friday nights at Fordham inspired this next song," Bono said as he introduced "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight."

Cold temperatures and a 5 a.m. wake-up call didn't deter the enthusiastic crowd, who came to see the performance. The show marked the tail end of U2's New York media blitz, in which they've been performing every night for a week on Late Night with David Letterman.
