"I'm a man-man-man, man-man-man-eater/ But still you're surprised ... when I eat you," sings Neko Case, luring you into her Venus flytrap on "People Got a Lotta Nerve," one of the highlights of her new solo album (following her last stint with the New Pornographers, 2007's Challengers). Indeed, there is something vaguely sinister about the seductive powers of this singer-songwriter with the Patsy Cline voice. It gives a mysterious pull to Middle Cyclone that is unsettling in all the right ways. So much so that she can be forgiven for the 31 ½ minutes of creepy frog sounds at the end.
