Bruce Springsteen rocked Boston without his wife, Patti Scialfa, on Wednesday night – because she's recovering from falling off a horse.

The Boss told audiences at TD Banknorth Garden that his E-Street bandmate and wife of nearly 18 years wasn't onstage because of the accident.

Scialfa took a tumble on Saturday while riding close to the couple's New Jersey home and is bruised and in pain but has no broken bones, confirms a source. She's expected to miss some upcoming concerts, but that's not unusual, adds a friend, as the mom of three has often missed performances when busy with the couple's kids.

The recent absences – Scialfa missed some concerts last week as well – have been noticed more so, says the source, because of current media reports that Springsteen is linked to a New Jersey couple's divorce proceedings.

In divorce papers filed in Monmouth County, N.J. on March 27, Arthur J. Kelly alleges that his wife of 17 years, Ann. C. Kelly, had "committed adultery with one Bruce Springsteen, who resides in Rumson, N.J. and Colts Neck, N.J. at various times and places too numerous to mention."

Ann Kelly, has denied the allegations. Springsteen has defended his marriage, saying he and Scialfa "have built a beautiful family we love and want to protect and our commitment to one another remains as strong as the day we were married."
