Nicole Richie, Lance Bass and Rosario Dawson can soon add "gardener" to their resumes.

The trio, along with a handful of other stars, has joined the Environmental Media Association's Young Hollywood Board and will help raise awareness and support organic gardens at schools in the L.A. area.

"Organic gardens are so important, especially in urban areas where many students would otherwise never see any greenery," Bass, 30, tells PEOPLE. "I hope that the Environmental Media Association's support will help them to grow and flourish in Los Angeles."

By participating in the campaign, celebs – including Maroon 5, Amy Smart, Matthew Rhys, Emily VanCamp and Emmanuelle Chriqui – will each adopt a school, help plant a garden and check in on the students throughout the year.

The program, which is a joint partnership with EMA, the Los Angeles Unified School District and personal care brad Yes To Inc., will launch in early summer.
