According to a family friend, Preston has made progress in her healing. "For months, she just sounded so tired, like everything was taking all she had," the friend tells PEOPLE. "She sounds a lot better now. She sounds rested, like she has turned a corner."
Jett's death has been especially difficult for Travolta, who shared a love of flying with his son. "He's so sensitive and loving," says the friend. "When this happened, he didn't know what to do with himself."
Travolta's friend (and Pelham 1-2-3 costar) Denzel Washington, who has been helping the actor deal with his grief, recently told reporters that the healing process is "going to take time."
Still, the couple (who have a 9-year-old daughter, Ella Bleu) are being strong for each other. "They've both had weak moments and strong moments, but they have found it inside themselves to be strong for the other person," says the friend. "They're the weakest when they're alone."
The friend adds Travolta and Preston will never truly get over the tragedy: "There is moving forward, but there is never moving on. Moving on means that they are cutting their losses and forgetting about it, but that's not what they're doing. They're picking up the pieces and moving forward."
