Coming from one of Disney's fresh-faced teen stars, Selena Gomez's recent message on her Twitter page was particularly jarring: "Tough times don't last. Tough people do."

Had she suffered a personal loss? Had she just broken up, as was rumored with Twilight's Taylor Lautner (even though she's never confirmed they were dating to begin with?) Or was it something else?

"No specific reason," Gomez, 16, tells PEOPLE. "We're going through lots of things right now, it was a really wonderful saying, and I hoped my fans could get something out of that, because they might be going through something as well."

Gomez, who stars in the Disney Channel movie Princess Protection Program, airing June 26, says the message came to her from a fan. "I loved that saying. It really spoke to me. It's true. And I had to Tweet about it." – Mike Fleeman
