If anyone would have a perspective on marriage it would be Robin Wright Penn, whose union with husband Sean Penn has been one long roller-coaster ride.

"All marriages have their phases," Wright Penn, 43, tells the British magazine :Psychologies" for its July issue. "It's life. We go through it, if we're married long enough. If you're lucky you grow and you work it out."

The actress had stated her observations after her divorce from Sean Penn was called off last year. Since then, Penn, also 48, again filed legal separation papers in April, only to rescind them soon afterwards.

In the interview, conducted after their reconciliation but before their repeat separation earlier this year, she was asked about getting back together that first time. "It feels good now," she replies. "If it didn't I wouldn't still be here."

Wright Penn also spoke of the "history" in their long relationship as a couple, which has brought the couple two children – Dylan Frances, 18, and Hopper Jack, 15. "There are a lot of chapters in our book. You have to do the work in your marriage, but it has to be laid on a strong foundation of love," she says.

"We have that, and shared history deepens that foundation."

At home, she says, Penn is the "family man" who injects the "energy" into the household, while she takes on the domestic role – though, last week, it was reported that Penn was taking a hiatus from filmmaking to spend time with his family.

"Sean is hopeless domestically," she says. "I'm the homemaker, and that's fine with me, because I really like that."
