A public memorial for quarterback Steve McNair will be held in Whites Creek, Tenn., on Thursday, it has been announced. The event, from 3 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., is to take place at Mount Zion Baptist Church. A memorial service is set to follow at 7 p.m.
The body of the former Titans quarterback, 36, was found with a gunshot wound to the head Saturday afternoon in a downtown Nashville condominium, according to police, who also said that a semiautomatic pistol was found under the body of the athlete's girlfriend, Sahel Kazemi, 20, who was shot in the head.
Authorities have ruled the deaths a homicide.
The relationship between the married McNair, who in 2003 split the MVP award with Peyton Manning, and Kazemi, who'd been a waitress at a Dave & Buster's restaurant, began around six months ago, according to the Tennessean
. The newspaper further reports that he was smitten with her and presented her with a Cadillac Escalade for her birthday in May. Relatives of Kazemi also say that the couple traveled the country together and McNair was discussing marriage.
Court records in Nashville reportedly indicate that no divorce was pending for McNair, though his home is for sale. His wife, Mechelle McNair, has made no comment since her husband's death, and police describe her as distraught.
And while authorities have stopped short of calling the tragedy a murder/suicide, they have stated for the record that McNair was shot four times.
