Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron are one of Hollywood's hottest young couples – but getting married and settling down is the last thing on the actress's list of things to do.

"I think [marriage and starting a family] is great," says Hudgens, 20, "but I'm so focused on my career right now that it doesn't really cross my mind."

What is on Hudgens's agenda is expanding her resume: The leading lady is taking on a different kind of high school role in this fall's movie Bandslam, a coming-of-age story about a motley crew of students who come together to form an eclectic band. Hudgens will play Sa5m (the 5 is silent), a quiet, shy girl who is a departure from her effervescent High School Musical character, Gabriella. And Hudgens is enjoying the change of pace.

"I think the best part about being an actor is playing different characters," says Hudgens. "I'm definitely going to revisit musicals later, once I feel accomplished at a certain point, that I've gone somewhere with my acting career. Then I'll go back, because that's where I grew up – in musicals."

Singing and dancing might still be very much a part of her repertoire, but Hudgens's future roles and projects will, she hopes, show off her versatility. In the upcoming action flick, Sucker Punch, Hudgens plays a tormented girl locked away by an evil stepfather.

"The fact that kids look up to me in my role as Gabriella is flattering," Hudgens said of her thrice-reprised HSM character. "But at the end of the day, I want to do R-rated films, and I want to do things that are a bit edgier, so maybe some kids can't see some of them."

Adds Hudgens: "I just think it's really important to try different things. I think a lot of people get stuck doing the same routine, and I'm just not content with that. I love trying new things and doing new hobbies and just exploring life."
