Mad Men's January Jones Dishes on Her 'Cracked' Alter Ego
"She is cracked, which is why I love her," Jones, who covers Interview magazine's August issue, says of her character Betty Draper – the repressed housewife of mercurial ad exec Don Draper (played by Jon Hamm).
"I come from a family of very outspoken women. I can't imagine living in a time when you couldn’t express what you felt," the 31-year-old star says in the interview conducted by Oscar-winning actor Jack Nicholson. "That's why Betty does what she does. She's imploding to the point where she gets so frustrated that she does something wacky."
And playing the tortured homebody seems to be paying off: "I mean, with the success of Mad Men, I get more offers. But a lot of them are for the sad housewife."
But before breaking into acting, Jones – who got her start in the world of fashion – had other career plans. "I thought I would be a storm chaser at one point," the South Dakota native, who dealt with "lots of weather," reveals. "Equally as dangerous as acting."
Besides her own show, the former model revealed that America's Next Top Model is her favorite show because "I love Tyra Banks … she's entertaining."
Mad Men, which recently received 16 Emmy nominations, returns for its third season on Aug. 16.
