Set in the misty Shetland Islands, Red Bones summons Inspector Jimmy Perez to investigate the death of a woman on whose property two archaeologists have been digging. The tragedy at first appears accidental, but when one of the researchers is found dead near the same spot, Perez must think more clearly about a situation that's only growing murkier. Cleeves is less adept at building suspense than atmosphere, and her tale feels flat at times for implicating too few suspects; she's no Agatha Christie. Still, Bones creates a dark enough mood to keep you straining to see what will come to light next.
