Targeted at Twilight fans, this is an innocuous series in which blood lust, teen hormones and eternal love mingle limply, like dead souls at a pep rally. High school student Elena, who recently lost both parents in a car accident and now lives with her aunt, is understandably pale and withdrawn. As played by Nina Dobrev, she looks like Katharine McPhee exhausted from trying to memorize Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven." Elena finds herself attracted to a new kid in class, Stefan (Paul Wesley), a broody yet well-behaved vampire who doesn't feed on humans. His older brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is the one out for blood, preferably drained from the necks of high school girls: He's the college boyfriend from hell. Vampire stories often improve as they go and undead corpses accumulate. So get on it, Damon.
