"He's a great dad and a good husband," the country singer's father, Doug Paisley, tells PEOPLE in a new interview, noting that the apple doesn't far too fall from the proverbial tree. "I feel I've been that [too]," Doug says. "I gave up [weekend] military service because it gave me time with him."
Brad, 36, meanwhile, appreciated his father's support growing up – especially when it came to his singing career. In fact, Doug was his son's "first roadie," Brad says, recalling when his father would chauffeur the singer, then 12, on the road and play sound man. "I'd sing five songs, tell jokes and be $55 richer," he says. "My dad never asked for a cut! Not even gas money. I still owe him money."
Now a father to two boys – William Huckleberry (Huck), 2, and Jasper, 6 months – with wife Kimberly Williams-Paisley, the country singer says he feels closer than ever to his father. "I relate to him in a different way," Paisley says.
Equally supportive, Taylor Swift's younger brother Austin, 17, has followed his big sister on the road – and recorded his experience in exclusive behind the scenes photos for PEOPLE's new Country Special issue, on newsstand Oct. 9.
