The news that Garth Brooks is ending his retirement thrilled his fans, but caused a few good-natured groans from his country competitors.

"It sure was nice for the rest of us while it lasted – we got a little more of the consumer money,” joked Trace Adkins of Brooks’s nine-year hiatus. "Now Garth’s going to come back and eat it all up, and I’ll have to get a real job again. Thanks a lot, Garth!"

Adkins adds that Garth’s massive fan base will no doubt put him on top again. "Shoot, he can come back and be as big as he wants to be, I’d imagine," he says.

With multiplatinum sales of his own, Adkins's career is in no danger either, but should he get an itch to switch jobs he’s already got proven experience in home building with multiple appearances on ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

This Sunday (at 8 p.m. EST on ABC) he returns to the show to help out the family of a police officer who was injured after being shot in the line of duty.

"They just do really noble work and I was happy to be part of it," Adkins says of getting hands-on for the show. Besides, he adds, "I’m a better hand than I am a celebrity!"
